Before the remodel, this home remained entirely original, lovingly untouched but showing its age after the first homeowner moved on. As the second owners, our clients wanted to preserve the spirit of the home while introducing function, comfort, and updated design. A key part of the vision was reusing the original St. Charles steel cabinets wherever possible.
In an incredible stroke of luck, the clients located a second St. Charles kitchen out of state, complete with taller upper cabinets. By removing the original soffit, we were able to integrate both sets, relocating, repainting, and reinstalling each cabinet, to create a more functional kitchen. It’s hard to believe the space once featured terra-cotta–painted cabinets paired with pink countertops and 4×4 tile backsplash. Much of the home’s original character remains intact, from the lighting to the windows to the unique architectural angles. To honor those angles rather than compete with them, the new flooring was installed on a subtle angle of its own, adding an unexpected design detail that complements the home’s personality.
In the mudroom entry off the garage, several of the extra cabinets were thoughtfully repurposed to provide additional storage. Their terra-cotta finish offers a nod to the kitchen’s original palette, creating continuity throughout the home.
